What Does the “Six One” in Six One Sis Mean?

The short answer is that I’m 6’1”.

Here’s the long answer:  When my mom offered to get me a personalized license plate in college, I thought it might be fun to do something related to my most noticeable feature—my height. I was rather proud of my idea, and I spent my college years driving around town with the license plate, “SIX ONE.”

I’d always laugh when someone would stand right next to me, look up and say, “I don’t get it. What does ‘SIX ONE’ mean?” However, it was fun when people got it—like the time a carload of basketball guys drove by holding up fingers for 6’5” and 6’7”.

“Six One” became my trademark, and it always became my default when I needed an ID.  After becoming a mom, I popped up all over the internet as “sixonemom.”  I later joined the twitter craze as @sixonemom, and I enjoyed my little spot in social media.

One day I was chatting with a college girl who apparently forgot that I was a mom. When she started lamenting that “so many moms were on Facebook these days,” I just nodded my head while she spoke. When she asked for my twitter name, I grimaced and said, “sixonemom.” We enjoyed a good laugh.

I figured if I wanted to connect with my younger friends, I should probably become something else. When I launched my instagram account a few years ago, I became @sixonesis. I’ll just be a mom to my kids, but a big sis to my younger friends.

I’m driving around town with that license plate again. So, if you spot a car with “SIX ONE” on the tag, feel free to honk and say hi.

Hi, I'm Kim

Most people start a blog and then write a book. I wrote a book and then started a blog. Kinda backwards, but I'm glad you're here. There's so much for us to talk about...
